GREEN OIL

Green Oil

Since we featured the story about chain lube from the Ecologist magazine, we've been testing Green Oil.

It's made from plant extracts and so far, it's getting the thumbs up. It perhaps needs more regular application, and we're watching its performance as temperatures fall. We hope to have a full review in a few weeks.

Meanwhile, we've bought in some Green Oil to let you try it at reduced cost.

FROM CHECHU

12 DECEMBER 2008

Hola,

Training camp was good, quite hard for this part of the season. I start 2009 in Australia once again, in just one month!!!

After that, I'll go to California - which is good for me as I can visit Bar Lata. Then I will race in Spain, in Castilla y León and País Vasco. And just before Giro, I'll do Romandie. Then I know nothing until the Vuelta a España.

I am really excited to race again with Lance. I think he will be amongst the best guys in every race. He is the best! The new season will be really exciting. Lance will bring back a lot of attention. People will love to see him again, and see if he can come back as good as before. His project to promote Lance Armstrong Foundation is good for everybody. Let's support him and the fight against cancer!

Since Lance stopped cycling, a new guy has become the best rider in the world - a young guy called Alberto Contador. They will both do the best race in the best team, Team Astana. Everyone, especially in Spain, is wondering who will be the leader. So that makes the next Tour one of the most exciting in the last few years. The answer is clear - the best rider will be the leader.

As I did last year, I'll try to enjoy myself and obviously, I will do my best. This new season is like a nice present for me. Last year, I felt really well and that was the most important reason for me to stay in professional cycling. With Lance coming back, I had no doubts about doing one more year, or who knows how many more(!). I just needed to know that my family was happy with my decision. They want me to be happy too, so why not. In these hard times, when everybody talks about crisis, I keep my job. It's the job I love, and I'm paid well. What else can I ask for? I'm a lucky man.

Thanks to everybody who has supported me for almost 15 years already, even when I'm not a winner, not a champion, not a star. But most importantly, I am happy and lucky.

I wish every one of you the very best.

Happy Christmas and an especially Happy New Year.

Chechu

TOUR DOWN UNDER

As expected, Astana's team for next month's ProTour race in Adelaide sees Chechu riding once more alongside Lance Armstrong. They'll be joined by Bazayev, Hernandez, Schar, Iglinskiy and Morabito.

The six-stage Tour Down Under is preceded by a classic circuit on Sunday 18 January in Adelaide.

Chechu told us this week, "I am training quite well, but the weather her is terrible so I've had (to ride for) many days in heavy rain. I hope to be in better shape for Australia."

WHICH CYCLIST HAS TAUGHT DANI NAVARRO MOST ABOUT RACING?

"Chechu. I'm really happy he is back with the team. He's a great example for a lot of people and not only cyclists. You see how many people follow him and they should continue. All the good things you read about Chechu is true. I should know since I ride and train with him. He's just a very nice person and has a great heart. He's helped me both on and off the bike. He's a good person to talk to for advice and I can learn a lot from just watching how he handles himself in situations. Having him back is a nice gift."

CHECHU'S RACE CALENDAR 2009

In a videochat on Tuesday with el Comercio, Chechu tells fans that it's unlikely that he'll race in the Tour de France.

Instead, he will go to Italy once again for the Giro and is looking forward to another Vuelta a España.

As in 2008, his early season will include Tour Down Under in Adelaide and Tour of California.

The Asturian province of Aller dedicated the summit of Coto Bello to Chechu last Friday in recognition of his work in cycling and his championing of this climb.

Cima Chechu Rubiera - viewpoint of Aller, the cyclist's mountain - will debut in Vuelta a España in 2009 or 2010.

Chechu told us that Coto Bello, now snow-covered, "is a nice climb, not really steep but perfect to enjoy without suffering. It was a surprise for me when they called to ask me if I would agree to put my name (to the climb). I really don't think I deserve it, but it is really nice."
